From my experience as a dancer throughout my career, I came to distinguish certain attitudes within the dance world that in my opinion limited the potential of dance both artistically and socially: competitiveness, crippling power dynamics, an exaltation of the individual self, and the imposition of ideals of beauty and ability that pushed dance towards becoming an exclusive art form. So I examined the contextual conditions that inform these tendencies and used this knowledge as departure points for my practice.
If this is not the way I think dance should be approached, then how?
Through a practice-based methodology this project looked for strategies to expand dance as a cultural practice. Since this research was embedded in an artistic research context —where the practices of making and thinking art continuously inform each other— designing, presenting, and reflecting about the different experiments became the main structure.
